Where does all that coolant come from?

On the lower right front of the clutch cover, in front of the water pump cover is the water pump weep hole.
This hole is here to allow any coolant that leaks past the "mechanical seal" to leak or drain to the atmosphere instead of being forced to leak in to the crankcase oil, which would cause major damage to internal engine parts.
This is a mechanical seal. It is composed of an impeller ceramic disc (1), impeller rubber seal (2), crushable outer metal seal (3) and composite mechanical seal.
The white ceramic disc(1) is pressed into the rubber seal(2) which is pressed into the pump impeller. The crushable metal outer (3) is pressed in to the body of the pump. In a VTR that is the clutch cover.
The Spring (5) pushes (4) against (1) to make the seal. This arrangement allows the seal to operate under extreme conditions of heat and vibration. The cavity where parts 1,2,4 & 5 reside is where the weep hole is located. If any coolant gets past the impeller seals it goes out the hole instead of going past the seal in 3 and 4 and into the engine.

These seals are expensive and difficult to install properly. Do not attempt to install one yourself. Only trained technicians should attempt this job.
